Video to Web: Part 1 - PRE-PRODUCTION
First you must start with pre-production: the conception, organizing and planning of the entire production. Figure out what the final distribution will be: a commercial for broadcast television or private viewing by potential customers? A feature for theatrical release? Or an infomercial or product showcase distributed over the Internet? Having a clear understanding of the final use will help put the pieces together for your budget.
For distribution in theaters or broadcast television, your capture medium requires a higher quality. The capture medium is the process you use to capture your image and sound. This can be anything from 35mm film to digital video cameras, with a large spectrum of formats in-between with just as large a price range. Obviously, the better quality of image, the more expensive each phase of the production.
Once your distribution or intended audience is ascertained, you can then work on the writing and direction of the piece. A key part of direction is storyboarding the production: realizing all shots, locations, props, and talent needed, as well as all the crew and equipment required.
